If you’re new to Figma, working with components, and have created an instance, you might be having a hard time detaching it. In this guide, we will help you with detaching an instance in multiple ways with an example to get you covered.
Detach Instance in Figma
- Open Figma on your browser and sign in with your credentials. To get started, click on the New design file. If you’re already working on a design file, open it from Recently viewed.

- After the new or existing design is loaded, add a component to the design. For demonstration, we have added a rectangle and made it a component by right-clicking on it and selecting Create Component.

- Once the component is ready, you can create an instance by copying and pasting it. The instance symbol will be represented by an outlined version of the component’s symbol.

- With the instance created, select it and right-click to find several options. From the available options, click on Detach instance to detach the instance from the component.

- Alternatively, you can detach the instance from the Design tab in the Properties panel by going to the section that displays its component name. Now, click on three horizontal dots to display options from which click on Detach instance.

Pro Tip: You can also detach an instance by pressing the key combination Option + Command + B on Mac and Ctrl + Alt + B on Windows.
Wrapping Up
Congratulations on learning how to detach an instance in Figma!
Many struggle to detach an instance because they mistakenly select the component instead of the instance. This prevents them from finding the option to detach. To avoid this issue, make sure to select the instance and follow the correct approach mentioned above.
