Figma doesn’t allow you to detach the component through the options that come with right-clicking on the main component. In this guide, we will help you undo a component using a way around through a simple demonstration to get you covered.
Undo a Component in Figma
- Open Figma on your browser and sign in with your credentials. Once you’re on the home screen, open the design file you’re working on from the Recents section.

- After the design is loaded, navigate to the main component and select it. Next, create an instance of it by pressing Ctrl + D or Cmd + D.
Quick Tip: To identify the difference, check its associated symbol. The main component has four squares formed as a diamond, while the instance has an outline without squares.

- With the instance created for the main component, before detaching it, locate the main component by right-clicking on it and, from the options displayed, click on Go to main component.

- Once you have located the main component, navigate to its instance and click on it. Next, click on three horizontal dots next to the instance’s name in the property panel on the right and then Detach instance from the options.

- Once the instance has successfully detached, navigate to the main component located in Step 3 and delete it. If you do it right, the instance will be as a Frame and no longer attached to the main component.

Wrapping Up
Congratulations on learning how to undo a component in Figma!
While this is arguably the only way to undo a component in Figma if you’re finding it difficult to follow the steps or work on a large design with multiple elements, check out Patrick Morgan’s handy Detach Component plugin. Â
