Check Screen Time on Android

The Digital Well-being and Parental Controls on most Android smartphones are part of Google services, and irrespective of the manufacturer, they all feature the same tool.

While a few might use custom approaches, considering all the prominent manufacturers like Samsung, OnePlus, Nothing, etc., use Google’s exclusive Digital Well-being and Parental Controls, we have demonstrated the below approaches on a Google Pixel.

Using Settings

  1. Start by opening “Settings” on your Android smartphone through the “Gear icon” from the “Quick Access Menu” by swiping down the notification bar.

Using Widgets

If you find the above approach long or you don’t want detailed stats, here is the simplest way to check the screen time, which is through widgets.

While this approach doesn’t display a lot of stats, you can check the screen time right away from the home screen without opening settings.

  1. Start from the home screen of your Android smartphone by long pressing on an empty area on the wallpaper.
  2. If you do it right, you will find three options; tap on “Widgets,” which is one among them.
Widgets
  1. After you’re in Widgets, swipe down until you find “Digital Wellbeing” and tap on it.

Enable Bedtime Mode

Most have the habit of using their smartphone in bed and get distracted by the usage, which affects their sleeping patterns. While the Bedtime Mode comes with a lot of options, here are a few steps that can help enhance digital well-being by reducing screen time.

  1. Start by opening the “Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls” on your Android smartphone. (Follow the steps listed in the first approach listed in this guide for reference.)
  2. Once you’re in, look for the section named “Ways to disconnect,” present under the wheel. Now, from the options under it, tap on “Bedtime mode.”

  1. If you have set it up earlier, you can make changes directly. However, if you’re new, ensure you set the “Bedtime Routine.”

  1. We suggest not changing the default options, and once you’re done with the “Bedtime mode” setup, do not disturb turns on, and the display turns dim and black and white.

Turn On Focus Mode

The Focus Mode works similarly to the App Timer, but unlike its timer, the app can be restricted for a specific period. Are you finding an app too distracting? Use the below steps to make it silent.

  1. Start by opening the “Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls” on your Android smartphone. (Follow the steps listed in the first approach listed in this guide for reference.)

  1. Once you’re in, look for the section named “Ways to disconnect,” present under the wheel. Now, from the options under it, tap on “Focus Mode.”
Focus Mode
  1. In the Focus mode, you will find all installed apps with a check box beside them. Navigate to the app if you find it distracting, check the check box, “Set a Schedule,” or tap on “Turn on now” to restrict the app and hide its notifications instantly.

Wrapping Up

Congratulations on taking a step ahead to reduce the screen time on your Android smartphone and enhance your Digital well-being!

While getting info on usage (screen time) stats is easy, picking up the right Disconnect option is mandatory. We suggest you check out all three and find the one that suits your usage patterns.

If you don’t want to deal with “Distraction modes” but want to reduce screen time, the best option is to turn on “Flip to Shhh” as it is instant, easy, and does the job perfectly. However, the downside is it isn’t strict and comes out of the mode right away when the phone is lifted up.

FAQs

How do I see screen time on older versions of Android?

The Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls were introduced from Android Pie effectively. While the screen time can be seen from battery stats on old and newer versions of Android, a full cycle can reset the screen time.
Hence, you need to use a third-party application or ensure you don’t charge until the end of the day from the point you wake up.

How do I get a live screen time timer on my phone?

The live screen timer can be achieved through the Well-being widget. Refer to the second approach – “Using Widgets” under “Check Screen Time on Android” for better understanding.

Which Distraction Mode is the most effective?

All distraction modes are effective in their way, but for us, the app timer felt effective, as the app is restricted from access when the timer is finished. Also, the “Family Link” compatibility makes it even more effective, as the timer set cannot be deleted.
