How To Delete Characters in Character.AI

Unfortunately, there isn’t any option to delete characters in Character.AI, even though it has been one of the most requested features. In this guide, we will present you with a simple way around to get you covered.

Delete Characters in Character.AI

As you cannot delete characters in Character.AI, you need to delete the chats and then remove from the recents. Feeling confused? Here are detailed steps with a demonstration to make things clear.

1. Open Character.AI and sign in with your credentials. After a successful login, open the recent character from the left panel to open it.

2. On PC, you can’t delete multiple chats at once. Instead, scroll to the character’s first greeting, click the three dots next to it, and select Rewind to here.

3. Now, you’re left with the first message. Click the three dots next to it, and select Delete message to delete the entire conversation and the history as well.

4. After the entire chat and history of the character are cleared, find the character in the left menu. Next, click on the three horizontal dots and then Remove from recents from the options displayed.

Note: While the above steps don’t delete the character, you will always start fresh with no history.  

Delete Custom Characters in Character.AI

Unfortunately, custom characters in Character.AI cannot be deleted either. The only way around this is to update the character. Here are detailed steps with a demonstration to make things clear.

1. Repeat Steps 1-3 listed in the above approach to clear the entire conversation and history.

2. Now, click on three horizontal dots in the character options on the right and then Edit.

3. Leave everything blank except for the character name and greeting, as at least three characters are mandatory. Before you click on Save Changes, ensure you set the visibility to Private.

Note: While the above steps don’t delete the custom character, modifying the character info will always start fresh with no history.
