Creating a bot in Character.AI can be a bit complex if you’re doing it for the first time. However, the best part is that it keeps it simple and gives you the flexibility to make a character of your choice. In this guide, we will help you create, customize, and set up your Character AI bot with a demonstration to cover everything.
Make a Character.AI Bot
- Start by conceptualizing your character. Think of who or what they will be, their unique traits, and conversational style.
- Once you’re ready, log in to Character.AI, navigate to the left menu, click on the + button, and then click on Character. (If you’re new to Character.AI, learn how to use Character.AI for the first time)

- After the character creation page is loaded, begin by naming your character with a name that’s 3-20 characters long. Try to name it in a way that reflects your character’s personality for best results. Plus, change the character logo if you have any.

- Shift your entire focus onto the Description, as it plays a key role in defining your character’s personality, traits, and interactions. Check out the tips below to create a good description.
Tips:
- Use short, impactful words to outline your character’s core traits. (Example: “Analytical, humorous, adventurous.”)
- Focus on likes, dislikes, and boundaries to guide the AI’s responses. (Example: “Likes: coffee, good debates; Dislikes: dishonesty, laziness.”)
- Balance traits to avoid repetitive or looping behavior. (Example: Use “driven, yet approachable” instead of contradictory terms like “laid-back, intense.”)
- Limit extreme or conflicting traits to maintain balance in personality. (Example: Avoid using “arrogant” alongside “humble”; instead, go for “confident, yet considerate.”)

- With the description generated, create a short Tagline which is a summary of the character.

- With the name, tagline, and description set, create a greeting. Pay more attention when creating this as it sets the stage for interactions (It is the first line in every new conversation).

- The above steps lay the foundation, but to make the best character, you need to create a character definition. You can provide instructions on how the character should behave and respond. This is hidden by default and to access it, click on More options.

Tip: As creating definition takes time, we suggest giving your inputs to ChatGPT to save time. Here are some tips to creating better definition.
- Use sample dialogues to shape your character’s responses. (Example: “{{char}}: Ready to explore the latest tech with me, {{user}}?”)
- Add placeholder variables like {{char}} and {{user}} to make dialogues adaptable. (Example: “{{char}}: What tech questions do you have, {{user}}?”)
- Highlight your character’s personality traits in conversation. (Example: “{{char}}: Let’s tackle that tech issue step by step together.”)
- Simulate context with {{random_user_1}} to add different conversation styles. (Example: “{{char}}: So {{random_user_1}}, tell me what you think about smartwatches?”)
- Balance the character’s tone and style for different scenarios. (Example: “{{char}}: Here’s a quick and easy breakdown of this gadget!”)
- Create clear context examples for how the character should react. (Example: “{{char}}: A product with no updates? That’s a big no-no for me.”)
- Use example chats to establish consistent behavior. (Example: “{{char}} always responds to feedback with: ‘Great point! Let’s explore that further.'”)
- Spread character qualities over multiple lines to keep responses focused. (Example: “{{char}}: I’m passionate about tech trends, user experience, and innovation.” )
- Guide away from unwanted topics by including clear limitations. (Example: “{{char}}: I steer clear of non-tech topics; let’s stick to gadgets!”)
- Use multiline statements to provide deeper context in character responses.

- With all core inputs provided, set the character’s voice. Click on Voice and then select a voice from the available options.

- Finally, decide on your character’s visibility. To do this click on the drop down associated with Visibility and choose whether you want the character to be Public, Unlisted, or Private.

- To finish the character creation, click on the Create Character button present at the bottom right corner after following and completing the above steps.

Here is the character in action, playing the role of consumer tech reviewer. You can also call your character and interact for a more dynamic and engaging experience.
