If you’re working with components, you might have a hard time making edits, as the component doesn’t update regardless of the changes made. In this guide, we will help you with editing components through a demonstration to get you covered.
Edit a Component in Figma
- Start by navigating to Figma and sign in with your credentials. After you successfully log in, open the design file you’re working on from the Recently viewed.

Pro Tip: Before proceeding with the steps, the first thing to do is realize the difference between a component and an instance. The main component has four squares formed as a diamond, while the instance has an outline without squares.

- For demonstration purposes, we have created a component and generated its instance.

- The changes are made to the instance first, and regardless of the changes done, the component doesn’t update when the newer component is added from Local Components in Assets.

Explanation: The component added to the canvas from Assets is an instance of the main component. Hence, changes made to the instance aren’t reflected in the new instance added.
- As the master component isn’t always on the same design page, right-click on the instance, and from the options displayed, click on Go to main component.

- By doing so, you’re navigated to the main component. Now, make changes to it to edit the component. For demonstration, we have changed the font color.

- Once you have made the changes to the main component, add a new instance of it from Assets (Refer to Step 4), and you will notice that the changes have been updated successfully.

Wrapping Up
Congratulations on learning how to edit a component in Figma!
We kept the demonstration simple so you can easily edit the components regardless of the design you’re working on. Changes made to an instance don’t reflect a new instance unless they are made to the main component. Hence, ensure that the edits are always made to the main component.
